Centennial Celebration Committee Group PhotoGood News from the Maryknoll Sisters Center!! 2012 is the year when the Sisters will be celebrating their 100th Birthday. It was in 1912 when Mary Josephine Rogers and six other women gathered in Hawthorne, NY to help the newly approved Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers edit their magazine The Field Afar. This group of women was passionate about their ultimate goal to become a religious congregation whose purpose was “to participate in the mission presence and activity of the universal Church so that God’s Reign of peace, justice and love may be proclaimed and witnessed to throughout the world.”

To celebrate this milestone, the Sisters are planning many activities at the Center as well as in countries around the world where they have missions. There will be an opening Mass to start the festivities and a closing Mass. Committees are working on symposia and retreat days, the dedication of a Centennial garden at the Center, a multi-cultural festival and many publications that will be made available.

What can you, as an alumna, do to make 2012 a truly memorable year for the Sisters? One way you can help is to raise funds so that the Sisters can continue to take care of our beloved teachers who are now retired and living at the Center; to maintain their Maryknoll, New York home which was built in 1932 and is now in need of repairs; and to aid in their mission work.

Alumnae from North and South America, Asia, Africa, Australia, and Central America are organizing many events to celebrate and to raise this much-needed money for the Sisters.

Another way to join in this joyous occasion is to attend as many events as you can. In particular, we will need many volunteers to help at the multi-cultural festival on October 27, 2012 and I will be asking you for assistance! Please mark your 2012 calendar…

Overseeing all the various working committees is the Centennial Core Committee, made up of five Sisters, one representative each from Full Circle (former Maryknoll Sisters), Lay Affiliates (people who identify with and support the Maryknoll vision) and Alumnae(i). I am a member of the CCC, serving as the Alumnae Liaison, and also working with the multi-cultural festival committee. To update alumnae worldwide, I have been forwarding the newsletters published by the CCC where references are made to both the Congregation (The Maryknoll Sisters) and the Society (The Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers). This is because the two groups will be holding some joint events in 2011 when the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers will be celebrating their Centennial year.
